In a weekend of great baseball, and an outstanding Sunday at Bonnet Bay, Cronulla showed a strong will to win in all grades against the Club Championship leaders Baulkham Hills.
First Grade Cronulla 3 def Baulkham Hills 2 (in 13 innings)
This was a game that would do credit to a grand final. In a game touching on four hours in high heat, the players stood up tall and fought hard right to the end with a bottom of thirteenth walk off win with a hit to Brad Griffin. Everyone in the team contributed but highlights would be a two run homer to Josh Dean to tie up the game in the bottom of the 7th after Baulko had taken the lead with one run each in the 6th and top 7th. Five scoreless innings started the game. Alex Brook went seven great innings of pitching with 9 strike-outs. Josh D came on in the 8th to "close" but little did he know, closing meant six innings of pitching (6K's) to get a result. Flawless outfield catching from Darcy Edwards who caught a "lot", and then a couple to James Napier in left field kept Baulko at bay. Everybody did their job, and Howie must be exhausted from 13 innings behind the dish. A great exhibition by both teams, 13 innings, 8 hits each, only 3 errors in the game, and a bottom 13 walk off hit ! The crowd went home happy, even the "picnickers" in the outfield.
RBI's: Josh Dean 2, Brad Griffin 1, Hits shared around. Walks James Napier, Alex Howe, Nick Gates 2 each QAB's Brad Griffin 4,
Second Grade Cronulla 8 def. Baulkham Hills 7 (walk off win in 9th)
Another close and exciting game. Entering the bottom of 7th, and Cronulla behind 7 runs to 5, the game exploded to life. Down to our last batters, with two on base, Peter Faulks strides to the plate with all his energy and cracks one to centre left fence for a stand up double ( he beat the crap out of 2nd base with his jumping up and down and chest pumping) scoring the two runs to tie up the game. Corey Rower, stepped up with familiar Illawarra enthusiasm, and drove it up the middle to score Peter F for the walk off win. This leaves a finals berth in the offering if they can maintain this enthusiasm next week against Blacktown.
8 hits in all, quality pitching from Travis Xuereb 3.1 innings, and Koby Paynter 3.2 inn. Peter F had a day out with 3 RBI's, and 4 QAB's.,
Third Grade Cronulla 2 drew Baulkham Hills 2.
Third Grade started the day with a 2 all draw against Baulko in a game that really should have gone their way. Some things just didn't work out with a severe injury to Tim Noy (Achilles) while running home from third for what would have been a lead late in the game, and a hand injury to BJ, both requiring hospital treatment. The others rallied though, and right down to the bottom of the last innings where they managed to load the bases with none out, but an incredible catch ruined the winning run coming home.
Hits to Scotty (what a clubman) Blacklock 3, Haydn Parker 3 and Ethan Texiera 2. Ethan coupled up that with the game of 7 innings of pitching (4K's).
Under 18 Cronulla 6 def Baulkham Hills 2
On Saturday, Sharks played very well according to a happy Coach and ran out clear winners 6 runs to 2. Although outhit by Baulko, and only recording a total of three hits in the game, intelligent play and good base running kept the runs ticking over.
RBI Trent Jamieson 2 QAB's Brad Griffin 4, Jake Quinlivan 3 and Brendan Regan 3. Brendan coupled that uop with a total game pitching of seven innings for the win.
Academy Team in Div 2 CSMLB won 10-3
Second Grade Women Friday Night Washout.
